Biography

"Mic Guillaumes is a dancer, choreographer and teacher as well as a consultant for the Minister of Culture's Interministerial Dance in the Schools program.  He challenges the very essence of dance, seeing it as a workshop in which the subject is revealed as it calls the world into question.  His poetic imagery is inspired by the thinking of Merleau-Ponty, Roland Barthes, Gaston Bachelard and especially through his professional travels to countries including Korea, Venezuela, Mexico, Guyana, the Antilles, Réunion, Denmark, Sweden, Sri Lanka and New Caledonia.  His first contact with contemporary dance was in 1953 with Jacqueline Robinson. He began as a dancer with several companies including Ballets de la Cité,  the Suzan Buirge company and Carolyn Carson, and later as a choreographer.  Currently he is also (dancing?) with emerging contemporary-dance companies.

"He is a founding  member of the Dance in the Schools progam (from elementary through university level), which dates from the late 1970s.  Since 1983 he has collaborated with hip-hop dancers in both transmission and creation.  He teaches in the Dance-Anthropology Laboratory at Blaise Pascal University in Clermont Ferrand.

"Author of "Signes de Dance" and "Itin-errance," he assembles professional and amateurs from all artistic realms -- dancers of all ages, designers, writers, poets and musicians -- for lively, fleeting projects in everyday spaces of all kinds -- rural, urban, historic -- to surprise or perhaps to suspend the spectator's viewpoint.

"In 2005-2006 he choreographed "Vagabonde" for the Loba (storytelling and dance) company. "Lui pas comme Lui," a dance for six actor-singers with a texte by R. Walzer, was performed in the Arte theatre-film festival.  He performed "Parole Metis" in collaboration with vocalist Anne Laure Poulain, and in 2008 he collaborated with composer Didier Petit  to create "Entre eux Deux," a commission for the Festival de Bourgogne."

Revue Balises

"Dedicated to the idea of collaboration, the Mic Guillaumes Company mixes with several other artistic disciplines.  Mic Guillaumes and the company's dancers have tried to open new spaces and provide a burst of fresh air in their adventurous works, which emphasize the unusual and the expansive, in hopes of gradually invigorating the very fiber of modern dance.  With so much enthusiasm and sensitivity,  many possibilities become reality. "
